MY NON-POETRY-READING LOVE

I am writing this poem just for you
because I know you will never read it.
Not that I wouldn’t let you, but I doubt
you’d care to waste a minute to do it.

I’m writing this for you because it will
reveal more than my voice over a phone
or my eyes on yours ever would. I am
writing this for reasons I could never

fully explain. Writing in the slim hope
that this mere act might change things,
in me or in you or in one who may
read it. I’m writing because it gives me

another chance to say what’s left unsaid
at dinner or in bed. Unsaid because
no words fit and poetry seems the best
way to express a strange feeling. I won’t

say shame on you for never reading this;
it’s more important that you never do.
So thank you, instead, for never reading
this, and thank you for never wanting to.
